Can’t Believe We Made It

Happy Wednesday everyone!

This has been such an amazing week for me so far!!!!

After applying to different jobs and going on interview after interview I finally found the perfect new job!!! My time at the Law Firm is coming to an end. Thankfully.

I am so very thankful for the professional experience I was able to gain. The Law Firm was my first salary position so I will forever be grateful. I will not bad talk anyone on the internet my momma raised me better than that! (Shout out the Destiny’s Child LOL) But I will say that I am excited to start a new position in and industry I am interested in. I have been dying to be around more creative people like myself. I’ve prayed for a job that will challenge me creatively, help me grow professionally, and offers a good starting salary. It’s rough to find positions that offer all three of those things but GOD came through for me yet again!!!!!! Manifestation!!!!

Last week I applied for a Women’s Media company called A Practical Wedding.

*Side Note here’s some background on the company:
A PRACTICAL WEDDING IS A WOMEN’S MEDIA COMPANY THAT FOCUSES ON WEDDINGS AND RELATIONSHIPS.  It’s made by, and for, smart feminist women. Bold and unapologetic, APW has spent the last decade as a pioneer in the wedding space, constantly pushing for inclusive, authentic, accessible stories of love and relationships.
Started by the newly-engaged Meg Keene in 2008, APW was founded with a mission to make the wedding industry a more feminist and diverse place. A decade later, that change has taken root in much of the industry, and APW has grown to be the largest independently owned wedding site online, with one of the most engaged communities on the internet. We host a million readers a month, and are one of the top 500 most commented on sites on the internet. APW is currently run by our founder Meg Keene, along with a diverse staff of (mostly) women, out of our studio in East Oakland.

The application process was unique so immediately I was intrigued with the company. Gaining this new position was no easy task. Starting off the job ad asked that applicants include a cover letter – explain why you would be a good fit for the role, include bullet points of new ideas for increasing revenue at APW, write a sample outreach email, create a Pinterest board of 25-35 pins showing your style/ aesthetic, in addition to a professional resume and up to three references.

Of course, I was excited when I was asked to participate in a phone interview. After the phone interview, I had the in-person interview, where I met all of the in-house team. The interview went smooth, we talked about the job in great detail, and I realized I had so much in common with everyone on the APW team. The team was familiar with my blog and we even talked about Beyonce!!!

Although I nailed the interview, I was given one last assignment to complete the hiring process. I had to create a list of possible vendors and draft a sponsorship email. If this was a year ago all these writing assignments would have scared me off. LOL My commitment to going above and beyond to complete every assignment really proved my personal growth and interest in working for APW.

I received the job offer after work on Friday June 15th. Needless to say I was ECSTATIC!! (I literally jumped around my apartment for about 2 hours)

Monday I put in my two weeks at the Law Firm. That was definitely a first for me. I was really anxious to get this part over. Everyone at the firm took it surprising well and are happy for me! My first day at APW is July 2nd! I am counting down the days!

What I am most excited about is the entrepreneurial creativity and millennial innovation I will be working around every day. I can’t wait to learn and grow by being apart of a women’s media company that evolved from a personal blog.

I am so thankful that with every position I’ve held. Not that I hated my job at the Law Firm but creatively I had absolutely no room to grow. Working at a Law Firm taught me great professional skills but it is time to spread my wings.

I received the motivation to start my personal blog at my current job. I purchased my website and wrote my first blog at my work desk after being frustrated the lack of creative freedom I was given in my marketing role.

My personal blog has helped me grow creatively and pushed me more than anything else. I challenge and motivate myself every week to come out of my shell and write what I feel. My blog has connected me with so many entrepreneurs and artists. I am still shocked that I have avid readers and supporters all over. lol My blog has given me the drive to build my own platform totally based on the things I am passionate about. The fact that I now get to work for a company that started from a blog is truly a blessing. A visual representation of what I someday hope to be. Mind blown!

Another reason my week has been amazing, this weekend while moving my little sister into her first apartment, the Carters blessed us with their joint album, Everything is Love !!!

All jokes aside this is a MASTERPIECE!

Beyonce and Jay have both been known to put out exceptional bodies of work but the production on this album is fire from beginning to end! All 9 tracks are genuinely good music. I’m not just saying that because I am apart of the Beehive and I’m a big Jay Z fan. Summer 2018 needed this album!

As if I wasn’t already planning to go to On the Run II I definitely have to go now!!! There’s no excuse! I have been hyped about this album all week. All the catchy sayings, one liners, adlibs, beats, and interludes just keep getting better every time I listen.

I die every time I hear Blue Ivy at the end of a track saying “Shout out to Rumi and Sir love Blue!”

Both of their most recent solo albums were emotional because of their marriage issues, infidelity, and healing pains. But on this joint album, I can tell they were able to have fun with music again. This album is all about Summer Love!  Lemonade was an amazing album but it is good to hear Beyonce happy and in love again. It shows both of them at a happy place in life raising their beautiful children, making musical hits, and traveling the world.

Along with the album The Carters released a visual for their song ‘APESHIT’ which was filmed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Yes Bey & Jay rented out the famous, historical European art museum to shoot their music video. Royalty.

Every scene of this video has a deep meaning connected to the historic art. We would be here all day if I broke down all the facts and imagery displayed in this video. I just want to highlight some of my favorite moments.

Check out @itsmeheidi_h on Twitter and her article for her full analysis of the Apeshit video and it’s connection to art history.

Now let’s get into these visuals…

1. Leonardo da Vinci, Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa is one of the most valuable paintings in the world. It was said to be the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world.

2. The Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon and the Coronation of Empress Joséphine on December 2, 1804

The kneeling figure of Joséphine being crowned by Napoleon who first crowned himself, then put the crown on Joséphine’s head, proclaiming her empress.

3. Portrait of Madame Récamier

This is a portrait of Juliette Récamier by David. She hosted one of the most popular salons in the city and was a brilliant intellectual.

4. Portrait of a Negress” – Marie-Guillemine Benoist

“Very effectively appearing for a single shot towards the video’s end, the inclusion of “Portrait of a Negress” by Marie-Guillemine Benoist is a powerful visual reminder of the ways that the black community has been (and still is) fetishized and commodified for centuries.” – Jake Boyer, HighSnobiety

5. Winged Victory of Samothrace

Winged Victory (Nike) of Samothrace, an Ancient Greek statue of the goddess of Victory.

6. Great Sphinx of Tanis

The Great Sphinx of Tanis is one of the largest sphinxes housed outside of Egypt and is believed to date back to the Old Kingdom.

7. Venus de Milo

The Venus de Milo, an ancient Greek statue of the goddess Aphrodite, has long been held up as a standard of awe-inducing beauty.

8. The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault

Géricault portrayed in horrifying explicitness scenes of a shipwreck based on a contemporary event in which the captain had deserted his crew and passengers, leaving them to die. The painting’s allusions to governmental negligence and corruption ignited great controversy and brought Géricault widespread attention.

9. The Louvre Palace and The Pyramid

The Louvre is one of the world’s most famous art spaces.
“What they did was interpret works and really take the viewer of the video both inside and outside of the museum space, and I thought that was one of the most profound things.” – Kimberly Rose Drew aka @museummammy on Twitter

I didn’t think it was possible for me to love the Carters more than I already do! I was pissed when it was revealed that JayZ cheated but there’s no denying that they are perfect for each other. Literally the definition of a power couple. If you don’t like Beyonce we honestly have nothing more to speak about and I can bet we have very little in common.

Thanks for reading & we’ll talk more next week!

P.S. F*ck the whole Trump Administration #FamiliesBelongTogether
